The product of the massive glacial melt that began over 10,000 years ago, the Great Lakes are the largest collection of freshwater lakes on the planet. Lakes Michigan, Ontario, Superior, Huron, and Erie all rest on the Great Lakes Basin, which is composed of five separate sub-basins encompassing approximately 35,000 islands. With a surface area of nearly 95,000 square miles and an estimated volume of 5,439 cubic miles, these shimmering lakes represent 21% of Earth’s freshwater resources and function as the lifeblood to countless ecosystems across North America.
This 13.5” x 17.5” piece captures the stark beauty and depth of North America’s Great Lakes through ten layers of intricate bathymetry.
